Pokémon Go has officially landed in the UK as of today! I’m sure you’ve all heard about it by now! If you’re not the type that has noticed a difference in the amount of people walking around glued to their phones, you may have seen it trending on Twitter for the past few days? No, it’s not a new series or a film, Pokemon Go is a game that has taken over our streets.
Pokémon Go
Nintendo have hit the jackpot with this one. It’s been a well awaited release to celebrate twenty years of Pokémon. How has it been twenty years?! The AR (augmented reality) game allows you to actually play outside by walking around finding Pokémon and you guessed it, you gotta catch em all! It puts Pokemon in front of you using your camera and you have to flick Pokeballs to catch them. You can also meet other people and battle with them, so it’s a very social game which has added to its popularity. There are plenty of images online of crowds of people huddled around one place catching Pokémon.
The Nitty Gritty
It has been a huge success with some gamers in the UK going to the trouble of changing their location to be able to get versions from other countries like New Zealand (before today’s UK release). “It's added more than $7bn (£5.4bn) to Nintendo's value by virtue of shares in the company rallying since it was released.” [1] “Shares closed 16% higher on Thursday, making an overall increase of 56% since the release - putting Nintendo's market value at 3.6tn yen ($34bn; £25.7bn).” [2] It’s at the top of both the Google Play App Store and the IPhone’s App Store.
More Installs than Tinder
In the US, Pokemon Go has been installed on 5.16% of all Android Smartphones! That’s almost double the amount of Tinder installs. Pokémon Go has more game than Tinder! Who would have thought it?! Gamers are using Pokémon Go more than WhatsApp, Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook Messenger. [3] You can see the batteries dwindling instantly. Hope no one needs to get an Uber home after they’ve walked so far!
So What Did We Do?!
As the old saying goes if you can’t beat them, join them! All of us at Doughnut HQ were curious to see what it was really like. Shannon was the most excited and we had a little mooch to see if we could find any Pokemon!

“I think I might walk home”
Shannon lives South West London and we are based in Shoreditch, this is how addictive the game is after only 10minutes of playing it. So on the bright side people are going to be outside and walking a lot more!
How addicted are you to Pokémon Go?! And if you know the best places to go in Shoreditch let us know!
