5 Killer Web Copywriting Tips

Here are 5 killer web copywriting tips to make you a content marketing superhero.

As a regular Futureheads blogger and marketer, I scour the web daily for the latest content marketing news and copywriting tips. Each morning I read up on what’s new in content marketing land and at the weekend, I check out copyblogger.com

for the latest in copywriting best practices.

As much as I’m loath to use an overused buzz phrase, it’s clear that ‘Content is king’. There’s no getting away from it. Writing attractive copy is everything, especially if you want to build a relationship with your audience.

It’s quite simple really – pay attention to web copywriting if you want to achieve your business goals and engage your audience.  Here are 5 killer web copywriting tips to make you a content marketing superhero:

  1. Use The Active Voice:

An active voice makes your content sound more powerful and interesting to read. Here’s a good example to explain this:

‘The copywriting podcast developed by our company can help you write better web copy’

VS.

‘We developed a copywriting podcast to help you write better web copy’

See how the second sentence is much shorter, direct and easier to follow? This is what you need to aim for.

  1. Write Powerful Headlines:

According to Neil Patel @neilpatel from Quick Sprout, 8 out of 10 people will read your headline, but only 2 out of 10 people will read the rest of your post. So this means your headline is the first, and sometimes only, impression you make on the reader. Spend time writing attention-grabbing headlines which also offer readers some kind of benefit or reward. Check out these resources for great tips:

  1. Break Stuff Up:

Nobody has the time or patience to read linear content. Instead of writing long indigestible blocks of text, make your content skimmable by following these tips;

- Use subheadings

- Use bullet points or numbered lists

- Use single-line paragraphs

- Use short sentences

- Include visual content

- Format text you’d want to stand out

  1. Be Concise:

Let’s face it, our attention spans are not what they used to be. You can blame the smartphone for that. So, keep your paragraphs short and your sentences shorter to keep readers interested. Top tip: limit your paragraphs to 6 sentences.

  1. Be Conversational:

Some of the best blogs out there are written in a conversational (and non-salesy) tone. This really helps if you want people to read what you write and develop trust in your brand. Your content should sound (and be) genuine.

I hope these tips help you write better copy for the web, but if you have any more web copywriting tips to add to this list, please feel free to email them to me at [email protected]. I’d be happy to hear from you.
